Supporting the People Behind the Purpose: How For-Purpose Alliance is Building Stronger Leaders
The For-Purpose Alliance (FPA) is a social enterprise dedicated to building leadership capability across Australia’s for.
Through Leadership Hubs, coaching and keynote sessions and leadership development programs, FPA gives leaders the support, perspective and practical tools to navigate the challenges of creating social change and lead with greater clarity and confidence. Their work reflects a belief we share at BFGN: supporting the people behind the purpose is essential to sustaining their impact.
Discover how For-Purpose Alliance is tackling leadership isolation through trusted peer communities, practical leadership development and a partnership with BFGN that connects its leaders to a wider ecosystem of changemakers.
Recognising That Leaders Need Support Too
Leading a purpose-driven organisation comes with responsibilities that extend well beyond running a business. brings a unique set of pressures. Financial sustainability, increasing demand, workforce challenges, changing community expectations and the responsibility of delivering meaningful impact all compete for attention. For leaders carrying complex decisions, having a trusted space to step back, gain perspective and speak openly can make a meaningful difference.
FPA was established in 2015 as the NonProfit Alliance after its founders recognised a gap in leadership support across the sector. Leaders were dealing with increasingly complex challenges, yet opportunities to learn alongside peers in a trusted environment were limited.
Founded by Carmel Molloy, whose leadership experience spans organisations including World Animal Protection, Australia for UNHCR and Camp Quality, the Alliance grew from a close understanding of these pressures. Its evolution into the For-Purpose Alliance reflects a broader commitment to building leadership capability across the for-purpose sector.
Accessibility is also built into its approach. Every paid FPA membership contributes to its Scholarship Program, helping extend leadership development to people and organisations who might otherwise miss out.
Turning Shared Challenges into Collective Wisdom
At the heart of FPA’s approach are its Leadership Hubs: peer advisory groups designed for CEOs and senior leaders working across the for-purpose sector.
Members meet monthly with a dedicated group of 12 peers in an environment where they can step away from the day-to-day, work through real leadership and draw on the experience and perspectives of other leaders. Experienced FPA Chairs facilitate these conversations, combining structured leadership development with the collective wisdom that comes from bringing diverse sector leaders around the same table.
The value lies in the combination of professional guidance and lived experience. Members bring situations they are actually navigating, with peers offering perspectives informed by their own leadership journeys.
With Leadership Hubs in Sydney and Brisbane, FPA creates a regular opportunity for leaders to Re-set & Reflect, focus on The Leader Within and benefit from the Collective Wisdom of their peers. Strengths-based development, coaching, practical leadership tools and access to expert voices through FPA’s Keynote Speaker Series complement the Hub experience, connecting reflection with practical action.
Developing Leadership Beyond the CEO’s Office
FPA recognises that leadership development is not a single course or one-off intervention. Leaders and organisations need different forms of support at different stages and in response to different challenges.
Alongside its Leadership Hubs, FPA offers individual coaching and mentoring, Strengths Profile development, Priority Goal Setting, Team Purpose and Values workshops and a Keynote Speaker Series that brings expert perspectives and practical insights directly to the sector.
Together, these programs create opportunities for leaders to step back, understand themselves and their teams more deeply, challenge their thinking and translate insight into action.
Connecting Trusted Peer Groups to a Wider Community
Our partnership with FPA builds on a shared commitment to making for-purpose leadership less isolated and more connected.
Announced four months ago, the collaboration centres on bringing FPA’s Leadership Hubs onto the BFGN platform. The model combines private spaces for individual Hubs with access to a broader community of purpose-led people and organisations. It is designed to give members a shared digital home where conversations, ideas, resources and connections can continue beyond the Hub room.
For us, the opportunity is to connect two complementary forms of support: the depth of a trusted peer group and the breadth of a national impact network.
A close-knit Hub offers continuity and understanding. A wider community opens the possibility of meeting someone outside your immediate field, discovering a relevant resource or exploring a new collaboration. Our aim is to help those connections become a natural extension of the relationships FPA already nurtures.
Making Space to Reflect, Strengthening the Capacity to Lead
FPA’s 2026 Impact Report offers insight into what members value most about the Leadership Hub experience.
Based on responses from 47 of its 60 Leadership Hub participants, Re-set & Reflect was the highest-rated dimension at 4.8 out of 5, reflecting the value leaders place on having dedicated time and space away from the day-to-day to focus on their own development. 94% of members agreed that FPA helps shape the way they show up as a leader, while 92% said it exposes them to fresh thinking, resources, networks and reciprocal learning.
The findings reinforce something FPA sees around the Hub table every month: when leaders have trusted relationships, different perspectives and dedicated space to think, they are better supported to navigate challenges, make difficult decisions and lead with greater clarity and confidence.
As FPA’s approach recognises, that development doesn’t stop with the individual leader. It has the potential to flow through to their teams, organisations and ultimately the communities they serve.
At BFGN, we see this as an essential part of building a stronger impact sector. Ambition and commitment matter, but so do the conditions that allow people to keep leading, learning and contributing over time.
We’re proud to partner with FPA as they invest in those conditions, and to support a community where the people working for a better world have somewhere to turn themselves.
