Revolutionising Connection: How Jimmy Leishman is Tackling the Loneliness Epidemic in Aged Care
Jimmy Leishman, Co-Founder and CEO of TeaTime, is transforming the aged care sector by breaking down the digital barriers that isolate older Australians.
Through a radically simple television-based platform, TeaTime TV, he and his Australian based team are helping families and communities share everyday moments of joy, proving that technology can be a profound force for human connection.
Discover how Jimmy Leishman is tackling the devastating health crisis of loneliness in residential care through frictionless technology, delivering over 100,000 moments of family connection and sparking a new era of digital volunteering across the globe.
Observing the Burnout Epidemic
Jimmy Leishman's journey to co-founding TeaTime did not begin in a technology hub, but rather through a deep, personal exposure to the aged care sector.
A former firefighter who brought both heart and grit to his work, Jimmy transitioned into social innovation, eventually working as an aged care placement consultant. It was here, alongside co-founder Ed Trick, that Jimmy witnessed firsthand the profound toll of loneliness on older Australians in residential care.
They realised that loneliness is a significant health risk facing older Australians, accelerating cognitive decline and diminishing the overall quality of life.
The problem, Jimmy observed, was not a lack of willingness from families or staff to connect, but rather the overwhelming friction caused by technology barriers.
Complex login screens, forgotten passwords, and unfamiliar smartphone applications created insurmountable barriers for a generation that did not grow up with them.
A specific, poignant incident in a care home crystallised the need for a solution that met residents exactly where they were, removing the digital divide and restoring the everyday closeness of family life. This visceral understanding of isolation became the catalyst for creating TeaTime, a platform designed to reduce the symptoms of loneliness through meaningful, accessible connection.
Frictionless connection through everyday screens
The power of TeaTime lies in its radical simplicity and its human-centred design.
Recognising that the tools available were built for people who grew up with smartphones, Jimmy and Ed created a platform that completely removes the digital friction for aged care residents.
Family moments arrive automatically on the television screens that residents already watch, every single day, without requiring them to learn anything new or even touch a device.
Families simply use their phones to share photos, videos, and messages, which are then seamlessly delivered. The impact has been staggering, with over 100,000 family moments delivered across Australia and the United Kingdom.
TeaTime launched on Foxtel's BusinessIQ platform in Australia and quickly expanded, demonstrating the universal need for frictionless connection.
Every feature the team builds is guided by a simple question: does this meet ageing people where they are? As Jimmy explained on theImpact Boom podcast, the goal is simple:
"It's about family. It's about the ability to keep families connected when they can no longer be together due to what is in this case aged care needs".
Scaling care with critical partnerships
Navigating the complexities of the aged care sector requires immense persistence, especially when introducing new technology to established systems. For many social enterprise founders, the three-year mark can be particularly challenging as a gap appears between their resources and the increasing demand for their solution.
TeaTime addressed this challenge by forming strategic partnerships and securing vital support from the AMP Foundation's Tomorrow Makers IGNITE program. Recently, TeaTime received a multi-year funding grant of $1.2M from the AMP Foundation, an investment that covers essential operational costs and allows the organisation to expand its reach. Jimmy reflects on this milestone with immense gratitude, noting,
"We're incredibly proud to deepen our partnership with the AMP Foundation, to expand our reach and impact’’.
TeaTime simply wouldn't exist without the support of the Tomorrow Makers IGNITE program, and now, thanks to the significant investment, we're ready to accelerate our mission to transform how people interact with, consume, and perceive care".
This backing not only validates their model but also provides the momentum needed to overcome the complex hurdles often found within healthcare innovation, ensuring that TeaTime can continue to scale its impact across the nation and globally.
A new era of digital volunteering
The ripple effect of TeaTime's work extends far beyond keeping immediate families connected. Recognising that many aged care residents lack regular contact with relatives, Jimmy and Ed expanded their vision to include the broader community.
They launched "Messages for Good", a community-powered channel created in partnership with the volunteer-driven not-for-profit organisation Friends for Good.
This initiative allows everyday Australians to send photos, videos, and kind notes directly to elderly residents who are at a high risk of extreme loneliness. The rollout, pioneered by Medical and Aged Care Group across their homes, has already delivered tens of thousands of digital moments of connection.
Jimmy believes this innovation is crucial, especially following the sharp drop in volunteer participation during the pandemic. He notes that the channel will "spark a new era of modern, meaningful volunteering".
By providing a low-barrier, scalable way for the community to engage, TeaTime is building profound social resilience. It is a beautiful reminder that connection does not need to be complicated to be powerful, giving volunteers a tangible way to help the elderly feel seen, valued, and remembered.
Leading with empathy and grit
At the helm of TeaTime, Jimmy Leishman exemplifies the traits of a modern, impact-led leader.
His background as a firefighter instilled a deep sense of optimism, dedication, and a drive to protect the vulnerable, qualities he now applies to social innovation.
Jimmy is deeply committed to genuine collaboration and recognises that tackling complex systemic issues requires a village.
He often reflects on his journey, sharing that the biggest learning has been understanding that they are not alone, but rather part of a growing ecosystem of social entrepreneurs looking to create lasting positive change.
Looking to the future, the vision for TeaTime is bold and expansive. As co-founder Ed Trick articulated, "Over the next three years, our goal is to positively impact over 100,000 residents and families across Australia and beyond. With the AMP Foundation's continued backing, this moonshot feels more achievable than ever".
Jimmy's leadership is rooted in a profound desire to leave a positive impact on the world, ensuring that technology serves humanity rather than isolates it.
Through determination and a clear focus on the residents, Jimmy is successfully revolutionising elder care for the better.
